Payday Super, from 1 July 2026

Until 30 June 2026 you could pay super at least quarterly for each employee. From 1 July 2026 the obligation is per payday: super must be paid for each payday, calculated on the employee's qualifying earnings.

Two practical consequences the calculator reflects:

What super is calculated on

From 1 July 2026 the basis is qualifying earnings; for earlier periods it was ordinary time earnings (OTE). Either way the practical idea is the same: the concept is narrower than total pay.

Which is why this calculator asks you for the earnings figure rather than assuming your total payroll number is the right one. The ATO publishes a detailed list of what counts as OTE and qualifying earnings; use it before you decide.

Package including super vs plus super

"$100,000 plus super" and "$100,000 including super" are not the same offer:

On the same headline number that is a difference of $10,714 in wages and $1,286 in super. Switch the calculator to package mode to split it exactly.

Late or missed super is expensive. The super guarantee charge applies with an administrative uplift of up to 60% plus notional earnings, and it is not tax deductible — unlike super paid on time. A voluntary disclosure reduces the uplift; the old super guarantee amnesty has closed.

This calculator works out a straight percentage and applies a cap. It does not know about salary sacrifice, defined benefit arrangements, contractors deemed to be employees, or the quarterly maximum base for a period before 1 July 2026 that had unusual earnings. Check the ATO page before relying on a figure that will be paid to someone.

Common questions

What is the super guarantee rate?
12%. The rate rose to 12% on 1 July 2025 and stays there — it is the top of the legislated schedule, so there are no further increases scheduled. It was 11.5% in 2024–25 and 11% in 2023–24, which is why older calculators sometimes still show those numbers.
What changed on 1 July 2026?
Two things. First, Payday Super: employers must pay super guarantee for each payday instead of at least quarterly. Second, the maximum contribution base became an annual figure of $270,830 for 2026–27 instead of a quarterly one, and super is calculated on an employee's qualifying earnings rather than ordinary time earnings. For periods ending on or before 30 June 2026 the old quarterly basis still applies.
What is the maximum contribution base?
It is the ceiling on the earnings you pay super on. For 2026–27 the base is $270,830 a year, so anything an employee earns above that in a year does not attract super. Before 1 July 2026 the base was a quarterly amount — $62,500 for 2025–26 — and this calculator uses the right one for the date you enter.
Is super calculated on the whole salary?
No. Super is calculated on qualifying earnings (ordinary time earnings, before 1 July 2026). Overtime, some allowances and expense reimbursements are generally not included. This calculator asks for the earnings figure to use, and it is your responsibility to decide what belongs in it.
How do I split a salary package that includes super?
Divide the package by 1.12. A $112,000 package including super at 12% is $100,000 of wages plus $12,000 of super. Switch the calculator to package mode and it does the division for you. Watch for the phrase 'plus super' versus 'including super' in a job ad — they differ by more than $10,000 on a $100,000 salary.
What happens if super is paid late?
The super guarantee charge applies, with an administrative uplift of up to 60% plus notional earnings, and it is not deductible. A voluntary disclosure reduces the uplift. The old one-off super guarantee amnesty is closed. Paying on time is the whole strategy.
